Research capacity development for the guiding of semi-autonomous and autonomous electric and hybrid vehicles for off-road applications

Project duration: January, 2015 – October, 2021

Project
Project description

An environmental scanning shows a global trend towards autonomous vehicles, at the automobile level (including Google and Tesla) as well as for off-road vehicles. The convergence of robotics and communication technologies will greatly benefit the deployment of such vehicles.

The project will focus on specific areas to address an industry demand for diversification and innovation in order to meet the needs of its clients.

Three technological areas will be developed during this research project. The main area will be the creation of an affordable and autonomous navigation system that can be adapted to multiple environments. Around this technological core, other enabling technologies will be added: adaptation and automation of a modular aluminum chassis and inductive charging.

Objectives

The goal of the ARION Project is to develop the expertise needed for the development and implementation of off-road vehicles dedicated to autonomous or semi-autonomous tasks. Addressing a demand of the industry, IVI decided to focus its efforts on autonomous special mobile farm equipment R&D. This R&D will be at the centre of the project and its intellectual property will be progressively transferred to other mature markets such as airport, cargo handling, forest and mining industries.
